Skuri

The healing properties of the mineral waters of Skuri were first discovered by shepherds in the late 1800s. According to legend, the peasants whose land the spring was on had deliberately tried to hide it, fearing that the nobles would appropriate their land if they learned of the springs and their miraculous properties.

Skuri Resort

A good secret is nigh on impossible to keep, however, and soon everybody knew of the springs.

The properties of the water were studied, their effects recorded, and they were granted the status of healing waters in the 1920s. That is how Skuri Village in Tsalenjikha Municipality became a balneological and climatic resort.

Nowadays people visit the area to treat their digestive, musculoskeletal, and peripheral nervous system issues. There is a humid subtropical climate, moderate temperatures, low barometric pressure, and plentiful oxygen in Skuri, caused by the blending of mountain and sea air there.

Skuri Village

Situated on the banks of the Chanistkali River, Skuri’s name means “a forest valley”. Two rivers flow around it, the Nolimeri and the Tsiskvilari. The rivers are rich in trout, and there is a small hydroelectric plant, called Skurhesi, there on the Chanistskali.

The area around Skuri is rich with historical monuments, including notable examples like Skuri Church, the high-backed tower, the ruined Archangel Church, the remnants of a hall-type church, and the “White Fortress”, which dates back to the 1st to 3rd centuries. There is also a functioning monastery in the valley.

There are many picnic areas in the area. You can also stay the night and try delicious foods served by the hospitable Mingrelians.
